‘AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D’ SEASON 2 PREMIERE REVIEW
I love all things Marvel. Avengers, Spiderman, X-Men, Fantastic 4… So when Agents of Shield was announced last year, I was extremely excited, especially as its set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with the first season taking place between the critically acclaimed Avengers Assemble and Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Starring Clark Gregg, reprising his role as Agent Phil Coulson from Iron Man 2 and Avengers whom, (spoiler alert!) died during the events of the latter. The first season deals with, among other things, Coulson’s ‘return’ to S.H.I.E.L.D with his new team, all of whom have demons of their own. It’s amazing how invested I became into all of Coulson’s team mates, but more on that in a minute.
The latter part of Season one deals with the fallout of the events of the 2014 Captain America: The Winter Soldier with the consequences leading into Season two. All the big players from season 1 are back for the action this time around but they’re all feeling the effects of the previous season. Resident ‘unknown asset’ and hacker Skye (Chloe Bennet), is a fully fledged agent, kicking ass alongside her new supervising officer Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen). Skye’s background is still a bit of a mystery at this point, but Skye’s previous S.O. (and the team’s bad boy from Season 1) Grant Ward who has now been imprisoned by Coulson, seems to know something so the truth will come out eventually and it’s a story arc I will be following very closely.
But the most interesting character development introduced in the first episode of the series is that of the resident nerds of the team, Jemma Simmons and Leo Fitz (Elizabeth Henstridge and Iain De Caestecker). I don’t want to spoil anything but it seems that after traumatising events of the season finale (which also saw the cameo appearance of Samual L. Jackson as Nick Fury) have left Fitz a bit… broken. What will happen to our favourite techy duo? Will Fitz ever admit his undying love for the ever beautiful Jemma?
Caestecker (Left) and Henstridge (right)
This time around, we see the S.H.I.E.L.D. team supported by Agent Isabelle Hartley (Lucy Lawless) and her colleagues Lance Hunter (Nick Blood) and Idaho (Wilmer Calderon) and promotional porters show that returning recurring agent Antoine Triplett (B.J. Britt) and Lance Hunter will be sticking around as full time members of the team in the fight against the new HYDRA threat.
This new season is looking absolutely amazing and I’m looking forward to seeing where Coulson and the team go in this new, darker season of SHIELD.
