They’ve given us snowmen seeking the perfect gifts and had Lily Allen Monty the Penguin - John Lewis ad 2014serenade us with the story of the bear and the hare, but for 2014, John Lewis have presented the story of Monty the Penguin, whose only wish for Christmas is a mate for him to love.

Every year it’s thrown to us that ‘it’s not Christmas until there’s a John Lewis advert,’ and now that their 2014 campaign has been unveiled, it’s time to unleash the tinsel and fairy lights, as the festive season is now upon us!

The moral of the story appears to be that this Christmas John Lewis is available for you to buy love, for those you care about. The little boy, who is apparently best friends with Monty, notices his sadness whilst staring at a couple from a bus window, and makes it his mission to wrap the perfect gift for Monty, a female penguin companion!

Now we have the music. Over the years John Lewis have sampled cover versions, such as Ellie Goulding’s take on Elton John’s classic ‘Your Song,’ as well as last year’s cover of Keane’s ‘Somewhere Only We Know’ performed by Lily Allen. This year it’s Brits Critic Choice winner, Tom Odell, who has been picked for the soundtrack of the ad, covering John Lennon’s song ‘Real Love.’

The advert was announced on John Lewis’ twitter, rather than the conventional ‘surprise it’s Christmas’ television spot. Adding to the social media impact of this advert, it has been viewed over FOUR MILLION TIMES on YouTube since its release YESTERDAY MORNING!

You can watch the advert below and tell us what you think of this John Lewis tradition in the comments below! Whatever you do, don’t forget to ‘give someone the Christmas they’ve been dreaming of!’
