REVIEW OF ‘INTO THE WOODS’
Let me start by start by saying that going into this film, having judged it from an amazing looking trailer, I had no idea that this was going to be a musical. It took me a good half an hour to get over the shock/horror realisation that I was going to have to endure 2 hours and 4 minutes of singing and speaking in rhyme. (I am a self-confessed hater of musicals!) I find musicals only slightly bearable in the theatre and I draw the line at films.
However, once you get used it and start to understand the story it offers a nice twist on the standard Disney adaptions of fairytales. It’s fair to say that Meryl Streep steals the show! I’m not sure I would call it an Oscar worthy performance but her character (the evil witch) was portrayed brilliantly.
Anna Kendrick and Emily Blunt are easily the best singers of the show – cue major girl crushes!
Johnny Depp’s role was tiny and without giving too much away, I have to admit a little bit creepy. I would have liked to have seen his character develop a little bit more. As for the film as a whole, I thought the story line was mediocre at best and found myself thinking “What on earth is going on?!” a lot of the time. There are quite a few unexpected deaths and the princes were not at all your usual charming Disney princes (although they did make good eye candy!). Hello Chris Pine! Our favourite scene involved Chris Pine and Billy Magnussen, and no not because they’re ridiculously good looking (although that does kinda help), but because it was comedic and ridiculous – what’s not to love?
All in all, I think if you enjoy musicals then you will probably love this movie. I however, did not. I found that an amazing cast, brilliant acting and stunning views couldn’t make up for the confusing script. What I still don’t understand is how this film is rated PG; it was far too dark to be suitable for children!
Our rating: 5/10
However, while our ratings may seem harsh, we didn’t know it was a musical going in to it and we’re also not a fan of musicals. If you’re a fan of musicals, you will love this film! What we do have to credit though is how stunning the film is; the cinematography is beautiful and the graphics pristine which cannot be ignored,; even from non-musical fans!
With that said, I have not lost my faith in Disney and I cannot wait to see PAN and Cinderella later this year.
