WHY ARE CLASSIC DISNEY FILMS BEING TURNED INTO LIVE ACTION FILMS?
I was causally on Facebook one day as most students are when they are procrastinating when I saw this in the trending section:
My reaction, oh god not another one! Now let me explain why I had this reaction. As anybody will tell you Angelina Jolie played Maleficent in the recent live action film which was pretty much if Sleeping Beauty went live action and was mixed with Lion King 3 (or 1.5 dependent of where you lived).
Now my biggest gripe with Maleficent was how it stuck two fingers to the whole continuity of how Maleficent was in every other Disney franchise before then. According to Wikipedia the end of the film is Aurora being ‘crowned queen of the human and fairy realms by Maleficent, unifying the two kingdoms, with Phillip at her side’. Maleficent returns to her role as protector over the kingdoms. Now if I remember the original correctly, Maleficent turns into a huge fire-breathing dragon and then gets killed by Phillip.
Moreover if anybody has played Kingdom Hearts then they would know that she is the head honcho of all of the villains. Having her being good in Maleficent completely puts a spanner in the works of this game, heck she is actually the first princess of heart to be kidnapped so that Maleficent can summon the door of darkness.
Now I know that some people argue that Maleficent is a stand-alone film. That having Maleficent as a well-rounded ‘villain’ is what made this film good. Ok and yes, I have to admit the 101 Dalmatians live action film was actually quite good but I think the straw that broke the camel’s back was this….
Whereas, Maleficent actually tried to update the story of ‘Sleepy Beauty’, Cinderella does not. In fact according to Wiki, the only two main ‘twists’ are that Cinderella has are as follows; “In this version, Cinderella and the Prince meet prior to the fateful ball. At the time, he tells her he’s simply a palace employee named Kit. The Fairy Godmother is a larger character than in previous versions, as she is initially disguised as an old beggar who watches over Cinderella before ultimately revealing herself as a magical being.” Now Cinderella wasn’t really that much of a complex plot to begin with, but I also argue that the dress in the poster just isn’t as glamorous as the dress in the original. Heck, I think I’ve got a maxi dress that is pretty similar to the one in the poster.
So what is my overall opinion? Well I think my biggest issue is that you don’t need to update these films. These are timeless films. I can still sing ‘Be Our Guest’ word for word. I still want one of those glass slippers. If I could find a boyfriend by just sleeping, give me his number. Now I know, some people are like ‘but Disney need more money.’ But the Disney Princess franchise gives Disney plenty of revenue without having to resort to THIS. It is with that, that I hope that little Mermaid is safe.
