Ways To Be Green As A Student.
All over the country university students have settled into their accommodation for this academic year. Freshers week is over and you’ve gotten to know who you’re living with. Now it’s time to think Green. Here are some simple tips to be environmentally friendly as a student!
It’s plainly obvious you should recycle. Anything you throw away and don’t recycle isn’t just going to magically disappear. It may make your life easier now, but the rubbish you throw out must end up somewhere. There’s so much useful waste at landfills. If it was properly recycled, it could be put to good use.

For students, there are two ways you can recycle, depending on where you live. If you’re in student accommodation, it’s likely you’ll have large designated recycling bins. For those living in rented housing in the Leicester area, you can order orange recycling bags from here. If you’re not from around Leicester, check on your county’s website and see what recycling services they do.
Thankfully, the plastic bag charge that was introduced has greatly reduced the amount of plastic bags being used. If you don’t already, you should purchase a reusable shopping bag for under £1.

You could also take a backpack, which helps when it comes to carrying loads of food home too.
Whether you pay for bills or have them inclusive in your rent, you should never take advantage of your heating.

It’s good practice to turn your thermostat down and turn off your radiators. It’s even better if you don’t use the heating at all and adopt extra layers and a blanket.

This is rather important for those renting housing. Your place probably just comes with your standard light bulb in every room, but having energy efficient light bulbs not only makes this brighter, but will also cut your electricity bill.

Although testing on animals is banned in the UK, some companies still do it to reach markets such as China, who have made animal testing compulsory. Whether you’re getting new shampoo or some new makeup, make sure to check PETA’s cruelty-free list before buying anything.
If we’re ever to slow down the environmental impact of Humans on our beautiful planet, we must get out there and spread the word. De Montfort University already does an amazing job of powering campus with sustainable, renewable energy but it is essential that students get their voice out there.
Don’t limit yourself to being green at home or on campus either. Get involved in the community. Whether it’s just picking up litter or joining a local group, make sure you’re doing your part.
